Since nails are a very small part of our body, some people would tend to neglect the nails and focus on the other parts of the body which they feel needs more attention when it comes to personal grooming. But this should not be the case as nails are a part of our body that is easily seen and noticed even during simple conversation. We communicate using out the words coming out of our mouth, facial expressions and hand gestures which makes nails very easily noticed. This is why nails should never be forgotten when it comes to personal grooming.

The basics of nail care that you should keep in mind are keep them trim and clean. This prevents other problems from arising such as cracked nails and infection. Keeping nails trim will also prevent them from interfering with your work, especially if you use your hands often. Scratching yourself is also a possibility with long nails.

Nails are continually growing tissues so this means that what we eat affects how nails are made. Eating a well-balanced diet ensures that our nails get their needed requirements to grow strong and healthy. For people with soft nails, eating foods high in calcium, protein and zinc will provide your nails with the nutrients that it needs to grow stronger. Drinking lots of water will also help keep nails hydrated so that they will be more resistant to damage.

Application of nail polish should be done properly. First, a base coat should be applied which will serve as the protection for your nails. Once this has hardened, apply a topcoat which will make you nails shiny and glossy. You should also check the ingredients of nail polishes before buying them as some may contain carcinogens like formaldehyde. Acetone based polish remover should also be avoided as this can be a cause for dry nails.

One thing that you should also remember when using nail polish is that it is made from synthetic chemicals. Constant exposure to such chemicals may weaken your nails and cause them to change color. It will be better for your nails if you rest them from nail polish from time to time so that they will not suffer form the effects of the synthetic chemicals.

Some mistakes that a lot of people commonly make are during filing of their nails. Some people file their nails right after trimming them. This is not recommended as nails are more prone to cracking at this state. A better time to file your nails is after putting on nail polish. This prevents nails from splitting easily due to the added protection given by the nail polish. Filing of nails should also be in one direction only to minimize the opposing forces applied to your nails.

Other habits that you should avoid are using of your nails as tools. This will easily damage your nails as it exposes them to mechanical damage. The same goes for nail biting. Using gloves when handling chemicals and other harsh substances is also a good way to protect your skin and nails from harm.

Having proper nails care habits is easy to develop as you will only need to remember a few things. All you will need to do is trim your nails often and always remember to keep them clean. Obviously, you will also have to reduce the chances that your nails get damaged by wearing protective equipment and not using them recklessly. By doing all of these, you will surely have good and healthy looking nails.
