I Want to Work as a Concert Soundman
Abilities, determination and true grit is required to become part of the road team in case you are looking forward to work as a concert soundman. In the music industry, the technological side is extremely important to understand. You’ll be dealing with amplifiers, speakers, microphones and instruments needed for a live performance just in case you won’t be operating within a sound booth. Your very title “soundman” says everything with regards to things you need to know: sound. It is your job to make the band sound good and you need to know how to make it happen, rain or shine, night and day. While this might not require a formal education, taking some basic courses would not be a bad idea. There is little time for someone to understand by doing during a concert, so you need to know a great deal before ever plugging in an amplifier.
You need an ear for music as well as for sound. It’s your job to be able to listen to the band on stage and understand how they will sound finest to their audience. The performing artists on the stage can’t in fact recognize how they sound to the individuals standing out in front of them. To work as a concert soundman you have to be the ears of the artists, because it will be your decision to ensure that they’re sounding excellent. You need to know that you’re the one who represents the band performing in front of individuals who paid out to see the music group perform, hundreds or thousands of them. You are also the one balancing the volume of the instruments, whether the bass is impossible to hear under the percussion or if the singer’s voice is drowning under the guitar, just like the band, you are also responsible for putting up a great show.
This is not an easy job. You won’t simply lie around and work for a few hours at any given time. You will be expected to perform with the band before the show, after the show, throughout the show. Furthermore, to be assured of rolling things smoothly, you have to adopt and adjust with everyone you work with. If you’re on tour with a music group, you’ll be on the road and dealing with all the demands and stresses that brings with it. In addition to that, you also have to be able to deal with the lifestyle because musicians are acknowledged for playing tough during tour. To work as a concert soundman, you have to be prepared to live life on the road.
